Name the people in old family photos

Review detected faces, place a missed face manually and record the life dates that anchor a timeline.

01

Open a photo and inspect the faces

Open a saved photograph and find People in this photo. Then & There checks for faces and presents unconfirmed appearances one at a time. Look at the face thumbnail and the full photograph before assigning a name. Detection can miss small, turned or damaged faces.

02

Reuse a person already in the bundle

Choose Choose an existing person when you recognize someone you have already added. Use Add person details for someone new. A suggested match is a question for you to answer, not an automatic identity. When unsure, leave the appearance unconfirmed and return later.

03

Add the dates you actually know

A person can have an optional date of birth and date of death. Tap the calendar icon for a known full date, or type a year, month and year, or approximate range. For example, 24/07/1987 is an exact day. Leave a date empty if it is unknown instead of guessing a precise one.

04

Place a face that was missed

Choose Add someone manually, then choose an existing person or create one. In Position the face, drag the square onto their face and use a corner to resize it. Pinch to zoom and drag outside the square to pan. Choose Save person and face when the outline identifies the right appearance.

05

Review people as groups

Saved appearances are grouped under the person's name. A collage can show several appearances of the same person together. Tap a thumbnail to edit that appearance or use View all to inspect the group. Adjust face position corrects a manually placed square without creating another person.

06

Review suggested matches across the bundle

Open the bundle's People workspace if you want local face suggestions across saved photos. Enable the analysis there and review proposed matches with Same person or Different people. Where a crop is ambiguous, open the source photo to inspect the highlighted face. A person photographed decades apart may still need manual confirmation.

07

Correct shared facts in People

If you discover an incorrect birthday or date of death, edit the person in People. These shared facts help rule out impossible photo dates. Do not change a correct personal date merely to make one photo's estimate fit; correct that photo or its clues instead.

A few useful things to know

  • One person can appear many times in a collage. Confirm each appearance, then use the grouped view to keep the page compact.
  • Facial similarity alone does not establish a name, relationship or age. Only confirm people you recognize.
  • If a crop hides a confirmed face, expanding the crop can make that appearance visible again.
