Good questions
Photo scanning
questions, answered.
What to expect from photo dating, face matching, exports and a one-time purchase.
Is Then & There an alternative to Photomyne?
Yes, if you want to scan printed photos and build a reviewed family timeline from ages, life events and photo comparisons. Then & There costs £14.99 once in the UK, per store, with no subscription. Photomyne also has one-time payment options, so compare the features and the particular plan rather than assuming it always requires a subscription.
Is Then & There a subscription?
Then & There is a one-time paid download priced at £14.99 in the UK, with no subscription. You buy it through the store for your device; Android and Apple purchases are separate. Store availability, family sharing and refunds follow the applicable store terms.
Can Then & There work out an exact date automatically?
It helps you narrow down dates from the information you provide: ages, birthdays, life events and other photographs. You review a full date for export. An estimated day is still an estimate; Then & There retains the range and clues behind it. It cannot recover a forgotten exact date with certainty.
Why do scanned photos show today’s date?
A new scan is a new digital file, so its file creation date can describe scanning or downloading rather than the original photograph. In Then & There, review a full Metadata date before exporting. Check Date Taken in the destination app; Date Added and file creation dates are separate. Keep your archive backup to retain the estimated range and clues as well as the chosen day.
Can I browse my entire Google Photos library?
Google requires explicit selection through its picker. You can keep up to 2,000 selected references in Then & There. This is different from the unrestricted timeline available for your connected Immich libraries. Google Photos connections are optional.
Do my photographs leave my phone?
Core scanning, dating and face matching work locally. Connecting an external photo service makes requests to that service; sharing and exporting send the files you choose. Device backups and third-party SDKs have their own data handling. Read the privacy page for details.
Does it identify people for me?
Then & There detects faces and can suggest a possible match to someone you have already added. You confirm the people. You can add or move a face manually when detection misses someone.
Is a photo export the same as a backup?
No. Photo exports are for use in other apps and need full dates for their metadata. An archive backup preserves the bundle structure and its context for restoring in Then & There. Keep an archive backup as well as any photo exports.
Which devices does it support?
Then & There requires Android 10 or later, or iOS 16 or later. Recognition and on-device transcription depend on the device and operating system. Check your device’s store listing for compatibility.
Can I use it without connecting a photo library?
Yes. External photo libraries are optional. Core scanning and dating do not need a Then & There account or connected library. Downloaded speech or recognition components and system permissions may affect which device features are available.
Can I undo deleting a photo?
Deleted photos go to their bundle’s recycle bin, where you can restore them. Deleting from the bin or emptying it is permanent within that archive. Copies already exported or shared are separate.
Will every crop or border be detected perfectly?
No. Contrast, glare and damaged or patterned borders can make detection uncertain. Review the result, use Adjust crop when necessary, and keep the original source. The crop guide explains the available controls.
